The Waller Scholarship
The Thomas E. Waller Jr. Scholarship is given to a graduate of a genral equivalency diploma (GED) program in the Taunton area who wants to continue his or her academic education or enroll in a vocational training program.
The scholarship is named after the late Taunton Daily Gazette publisher, who is widely regarded as the catalyst behind the founding of the Taunton Literacy Council and served as its first president. Mr. Waller was publisher of the newpaper from 1989 until his death in October 1993 at age 46.
The first $1,000 scholarship was awarded in 1995.
